MORENO VALLEY, California – If the wait between Top Rank broadcast deals seemed excruciating for fight fans, featherweight prospect Albert “Chop Chop” Gonzalez showed his ability to bob and weave through adversity.
By participating in four club shows during promoter Bob Arum’s nine-plus-month break between his last ESPN card and the coming DAZN debut expected by late spring, Gonzalez, 16-0 (9 KOs), remained active and sharp for when his TV work resumes.
“I truly think so. It’s been awhile since I was last on ESPN. It’s a different me, by adding more things to my arsenal, working on my defense so that once I get the opportunity, I’ll be able to show that more whole, better version,” Gonzalez told BoxingScene Wednesday.
Gonzalez, 23, spoke at his trainer Robert Garcia’s boxing academy, where he is putting the finishing touches on preparing for Saturday’s ProBox TV card headlined by Lester Martinez’s interim WBC super-middleweight title fight versus Immanuwel Aleem at the Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino, California.
During Top Rank’s TV blackout, Gonzalez fought in August, October and January 17 in Southern California, within driving distance from his Moreno Valley home.
They say fighting at home is a unique challenge for boxers, adding the pressure of ticket favors, less seclusion during training and other distractions.
Gonzalez posted a decision victory by shutout on the scorecards, and added two knockouts during the stretch.
“I feel like I gained a lot, fighting in front of my home fans, being able to handle what that will be like as my career goes on,” Gonzalez said. “Even though there was no TV deal, they had me busy, fighting every other month. That kept me in the gym, working to perfect my craft every day.”
On Saturday, Gonzalez meets 39-year-old Brandon Chambers, 12-4-1 (5 KOs), of Maryland.
“I learned I was on [this card] the first week after my last fight, so I took just a week off and I was back in here, focusing on this date,” Gonzalez said. “I know he’s tough, won some little titles. I let my team do the studying and they inform me about what there is to worry about and we go from there.”
A power puncher with sophisticated boxing talent, Gonzalez prides himself on his conditioning and commitment to being a world champion.
When Top Rank on DAZN launches, he hopes there’s a spot for him.
“God willing, they get me on one of those first cards,” he said. “I’ll get more exposure beyond fighting here at home. I want to get my name out there more on TV. As soon as they make that first card, I hope they throw me on there.”
