Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has admittedly had a difficult time in negotiating the next fight for former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Recently, Chavez rejected an offer to face Gennady Golovkin on an HBO Pay-Per-View date in July, because the Mexican star refused to agree to Top Rank's contractual clause of a two-fight extension.
Chavez has been very vocal regarding his desire to become a free agent and he believes his contract with Top Rank is expiring soon, but Arum maintains the contract is good until October 2015.
Chavez claims he was offered a purse of $6.6 million for Golovkin, but only if he agreed to a two fight extension. After rejecting the portion of the deal that extended his promotional contract, Chavez alleges that Top Rank came back with a much lower offer of $2 million, which didn't include any extension clause, but Chavez rejected the monetary offer for being what he believed was too low.
"Things have been tough with Chavez because his adviser Billy Keane has given him bad advice. Even his father, Julio Cesar Chavez, has told him to continue with Top Rank. He urged him to sign the contract that we offered for the fight. We offered seven million dollars for the fight with Gennady Golovkin, but he did not accept. Now we can't do that fight because Golovkin already involved in another fight. We offered that sum to Julio, and told that he would earn [a guarantee of] five million for the next fight, and then [if he won he would earn] ten million for the next, but he did not accept. We're going to continue to push, we will offer other opponents and see what happens," Arum revealed.
