Saturday’s offering of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN is truly Twice As Nice.
Miguel Berchelt and Francisco Vargas will once again collide in their super featherweight title fight rematch, which airs live from Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Ariz. (Saturday, ESPN, 10:00pm ET/7:00pm PT and local time). Berchelt (35-1, 31KOs) violently snatched the strap with an 11th round stoppage of Vargas (25-1-2, 18KOs) in their Jan. ’17 meet, as he looks to make his fifth title defense.
Opening the telecast, Emanuel Navarrete (26-1, 22KOs) hopes to prove his Dec. 2018 title winning effort is twice as nice as he’s prepared to run it back with former champ Isaac Dogboe (20-1, 14KOs). Neither boxer has fought since their first meeting five months ago.
UNDERCARD (MORE RESULTS TO COME)
Tucson’s Emmanuel Guajardo had to dig deep to preserve his unbeaten record, managing a four-round majority decision over Jonathan Espino in their super welterweight contest. An even tally of 38-38 was overruled by scores of 39-37 and 40-36 in favor of Guajardo.
The bout was every bit has competitive and difficult to score as suggested by the final scores. Espino (2-4, 2KOs) was dog tough and in Guajardo’s face for the duration of the four-round affair. The California-based boxer clearly outworked the local favorite in round two, but his efforts not at all recognized by one judge who had it a shutout.
Guajardo ultimately prevailed through superior workrate and utilizing his massive height and reach advantage—a recurring theme on Saturday’s show with three bouts coming with a 6” height difference between opponents. For the 6’1” Guajardo (5-0, 0KOs), it came in handy in keeping the 5’7” Espino at his desired distance just long enough to escape with his perfect record still intact.
