Sheffield middleweight contender Adam Etches believes IBF welterweight titleholder Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) is capable of beating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight king Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Brook is moving up by thirteen pounds to face Golovkin on September 10th at the O2 Arena in London.
Golovkin is a very big favorite to win, with very few pundits giving Brook a shred of a chance to win the fight.
According to Etches - who happens to be a very big fan of Golovkin - there are only two fighters that are capable of beating GGG around that weight class - Andre Ward and Brook.
Brook secured the big shot after British middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr. was unable to reach an agreement for the contest. At last week's 30 day weight check, as mandated by the WBC, Brook raised a lot of eyebrows when he weighed in 11 pounds heavier than Golovkin. Brook was 176, while Golovkin was only 165.
"Kell is often around that weight anyway, it’s natural to him and he’s more than comfortable with it - he’s massive to be campaigning at welter. I think GGG is the best boxer around but if anybody can match him it would be Kell and maybe Ward," Etches told the Sheffield Star.
"GGG would have made a mess of Chris Eubank Jr but Kell’s style will make it a great match. There’s no point going in there just for a fight, you have to mess him around and grab him if necessary, like Kell did against Shawn Porter. Kell might not punch as hard but he has got more than enough power to get GGG’s respect.”
"Look what Manny Pacquiao achieved, (eight-division world champion.) Anything is possible. Yes GGG is the favorite but Kell, in my eyes, has got what it takes to win.”
