Ricky Burns and Michele Di Rocco have had their clash upgraded.

The pair, who meet at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow on May 28, were scheduled to do battle for the WBA super lightweight title, which is vacant.

But Boxing Scene has learned that the fight, which is topping a bill aptly named ‘History In The Making’, live on Sky Sports, has now been handed added significance.

Coatbridge man Burns (39-5-1, 13 KOs) is bidding to become a three-weight world champion, having previously won global honours at super featherweight and lightweight, when he takes on Italy’s former European champ Di Rocco (40-1-1, 18 KOs), who is undefeated in eight-and-a-half years.

The vacant WBA Super title at super lightweight will now be at stake for the duo after the prize was lost on the scales by previous holder Adrien Broner earlier this month when he failed to make weight for his clash against London-born Ashley Theophane, who he stopped inside nine rounds at DC Armoury in Washington on April 1.

Should Burns come out victorious next month, he will go down in the history books as the first Scot ever to win world titles at three different weights in the sport.

The chief support contest is a British super lightweight title battle between holder Tyrone Nurse and Willie Limond, while the undercard for the show is headed by British, WBO European and WBC International bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett.

Elsewhere, John Ryder, Lewis Paulin and Joe Ham will feature alongside Charlie Flynn and Matchroom Boxing’s newest star Conor Benn, who stopped his opponent inside a round on his debut last weekend.
