Scott Cardle will make his return to the ring later this month.

The British lightweight champion, who clung to his belt by the skin of his teeth last month, is set for a tick-over contest, live on Sky Sports.

Cardle (19-0-1, 6 KOs) drew with Sean Dodd in Liverpool in their rematch on April 2, but is now scheduled for action on May 28 in Scotland.

The Lytham St Annes man, 26, will form part of the supporting cast to Ricky Burns’ bid to make history as he takes on Michele Di Rocco of Italy for the vacant Super WBA super-lightweight belt –– and a win at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow will mean he becomes the first Scot ever to win global honours in three different weight divisions.

Boxing Scene understands that Cardle, who says he is “over the moon” to be added to the card, will box over eight rounds before defending his domestic crown again for a third time later in the year.

The chief supporting contest on the card, which is being billed ‘History In The Making’, is a British super-lightweight title battle between holder Tyrone Nurse and Willie Limond, while the undercard for the show is headed by British, WBO European and WBC International bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett and also features former world light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly as well as a British cruiserweight title eliminator between Jon-Lewis Dickinson and Tommy McCarthy.

John Ryder, Lewis Paulin and Joe Ham will feature alongside Charlie Flynn, who’ll fight for the vacant Celtic lightweight title, and Sam Ball, who takes on fellow prospect George Hennon.

Matchroom Boxing’s Conor Benn will have to get past this test before featuring on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s first defence of the IBF heavyweight title against Dominic Breazeale on June 25 at the O2 Arena in London.

And there is a long-awaited return to action for Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo, who has been out through injury since last July, over six rounds, while the card is completed by the undefeated Glasgow super-welterweight Marc Kerr.

Josh Taylor, the unbeaten Commonwealth Games gold medallist who moved to 5-0 (5 KOs) last weekend in Cardiff, is now no longer scheduled to appear on the bill.
