WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (44-0, 38KOs) left a big impression on six division world champion Oscar De La Hoya, who is the president of Golden Boy Promotions.
Gonzalez was in action last Saturday night at New York's Madison Square Garden. He stopped Brian Viloria in the ninth round. The bout was the co-featured attraction of the Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux HBO Pay-Per-View.
De La Hoya, as the promoter of Lemieux, sat ringside and took in the impressive performance of Gonzalez.
The Nicaraguan fighter is now regarded by many outlets around the globe as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.
Gonzalez will now rest and looks to return in the first quarter of 2016.
"Roman can be a part of any pay-per-view that can be organized, but is unlikely to be [the headliner]. He still has a way to go [before headlining PPV events], but he's a great fighter. He's a great fighter and he deserves [his pound-for-pound status]," De La Hoya said.
"I like the fact that he works [in the ring] like a professional fighter with rhythm and coordination. His heart is there and what impressed me the most is that he reminded me of my idol Alexis Arguello. This is the type of class that Chocolatito has. I love how aggressive he is, but also very smart. He doesn't not waste energy."
"The punches are well placed with great power and no wasted energy. He is one of my favorite fighters. He's a great fighter, a great person, and he deserves being the best pound for pound."
