Japan’s Katsuma Akitsugi has spent his entire career fighting in the U.S., building himself into a bantamweight title contender ranked by all four sanctioning bodies.
Now, Akitsugi has the opportunity to get back home.
As part of a co-promotional agreement announced Wednesday between Akitsugi promoter Garry Jonas of ProBoxTV and Japan’s Teiken Promotions head Akihiko Honda, Akitsugi 14-0 (4 KOs) will meet Mexico’s Jose Miguel Calderon April 11 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.
“I’m very honored to be fighting for Teiken Promotions, which I never imagined,” Akitsugi said in a prepared statement. “This definitely brings me closer to becoming a champion and doing it at home, in front of my Japanese people. I couldn’t be happier or more excited for this opportunity.”
Wakayama, Japan’s Akitsaugi, 28, is ranked No. 5 by the IBF, No. 8 in the WBO, No. 12 in the WBC and No. 14 in the WBA while training under Coach Eddie Hernandez at the famed Wild Card Boxing Club of Hall of Fame cornerman Freddie Roach.
BoxingScene has learned Akitsugi, a southpaw, was originally in discussions to fight IBF No. 3-ranked bantamweight Kenneth Llover, 17-0 (12 KOs), in an IBF eliminator bout for champion Jose Salas Reyes of Mexico before the opportunity to return home surfaced.
The bout versus the Philippines’ Llover would’ve been based in the Philippines, and given Akitsugi’s tendency to go the distance, gambling with the scorecards as the visitor in hostile territory seemed loaded with risk,
The 22-year-old Calderon 14-3 (6 KOs) has been knocked out once.
“Akitsugi has developed into one of the best Japanese fighters and is a serious championship contender in the 118lbs division,” Honda said. “We are excited to bring him home and showcase him in front of his people. Garry Jonas and his ProBoxTV platform have done a great job developing this fighter and we look forward to partnering with them.”
Jonas said he’s “very excited to be partnering with Teiken as it relates to working with Akitsugi,” noting Honda’s Hall of Fame credentials.
“Teiken has been a leader for many years and there’s no one better to work with on this,” Jonas said.
“I’m also very happy for Katsuma. Ever since he came here, it’s been a dream of his to go back and fight in Japan, and to do so on their biggest stage with Teiken Promotions has him thrilled about this development.”
Teiken also promotes WBA bantamweight champion Seiya Tsutsumi and WBC title challenger Juan Francisco Estrada, who meets Japan’s Tenshin Nasukawa for that vacant belt in April.
