In a few more days, Jhonny Gonzalez will be traveling to the beautiful port of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, where on the 24 of May he will defend the world featherweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) against an unbeaten contender from Guyana, Clive "Punisher" Atwell. Jhonny (55-8, 47 KOs) is taking no chances, stating that Atwell (12-0-1, 7 KOs) is a dangerous opponent.
"I have prepared one hundred percent because Clive Atwell is a dangerous opponent. He is young, undefeated, is known to have a respectable punch, and he has a lot of amateur fights. Fighters [with few pro bouts and a lot of amateur fights are fining success], like the Japanese fighter who just knocked out Adrian "Confessor" Hernandez, or the Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux, who is a world champion," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez also says Abner Mares is running from a rematch of their August 2013 clash, when Gonzalez scored a first round TKO.
"Fortunately I do not need Abner Mares. His promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, is the one who is praying for us to fight, but [Mares] is the one who doesn't want to do it. If he wants to do it later, then good, no problem," Gonzalez said.
Some of the fighters Gonzalez may want in the near future is Mikey Garcia, Rene Alvarado and even a rematch with Daniel Ponce De Leon.
