Talks between Jose Armando Resendiz and Jaime Munguia have hit a wall.
BoxingScene has confirmed that the all-Mexico clash is no longer in play, at least not for May 2. The two were in talks for an attractive matchup that would have landed on the Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez-David Benavidez undercard at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, Tijuana’s Munguia was removed from the mix after reportedly pricing himself out of the fight.
Messages left with representatives for both parties as well as Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) went unreturned as this goes to publication.
News of the fallout was first reported by Bernardo Pilatti, founder of Bernardo Pilatti - Sin Filtro podcast.
Rumors have swirled that Resendiz, 16-2 (11 KOs), could now be on course to next face former two-division titlist Jermall Charlo, 34-0 (23 KOs).
The matchup would settle old business, as both appeared on the same May 31 PBC on Prime Video show from Michelob Ultra Arena in Vegas. Charlo ended an 18-month ring absence with a sixth-round technical knockout of Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna. Resendiz pulled off the 2025 Upset of the Year with a 12-round decision win over Caleb Plant in the main event.
The win saw Resendiz net a secondary version of the WBA 168lbs title. He was since upgraded to full titleholder last December, upon the retirement of Terence “Bud” Crawford, who was the recognized lineal, Ring and undisputed super middleweight champ following his upset win over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September.
In theory, a Resendiz-Charlo matchup should be easy to piece together since both fight under the PBC banner.
However, one hurdle to clear would be the determination of whether Resendiz is due to make a mandatory title defense.
One night prior to Resendiz’s win over Plant, Bektemir Melikuziev solidified his position as the WBA’s No. 1 contender after a narrow but well-earned unanimous decision over Darius Fulghum. Uzbekistan’s Melikuziev dropped the unbeaten Fulghum in the final round to eke out a win 24 hours before and mere miles away from Resendiz’s career-best victory.
Working in Resendiz’s favor is the fact that Melikuziev, 16-1 (10 KOs), currently has a fight on the books. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist is set to face Sena Agbeko this Saturday on the Mario Barrios-Ryan Garcia DAZN pay-per-view undercard at T-Mobile Arena.
PBC officials could appeal to the WBA to sanction the Resendiz-Charlo fight, with the winner to next face Melikuziev later this year.
