Kaipo Gallegos doesn’t just want to make a statement – he wants to shed a label in the process.
Gallegos will face Julian Gonzalez in a lightweight bout on Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bout will be Gallegos’ first 10-round bout and his first notable televised fight, which will be streamed on the YouTube preliminary card.
Gallegos, 11-0-1 (9 KOs), is a 20-year-old boxing prodigy who has fine-tuned his skills in Las Vegas gyms and on Saturday will be making his second fight there this year. He fought in January, knocking out Wilson Akinocho in the third round on the Raymond Muratalla-Andy Cruz undercard at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
“I want to prove I’m not just a prospect,” Gallegos said. “I’m the future of this division. This is a big step toward world title contention, and I’m not letting it slip.”
The bout also holds special meaning; Gallegos is from Las Vegas. The first major milestone in his career – a televised fight against a quality opponent – will also take place in his hometown.
Trained by his father, Jayson Gallegos, Kaipo aims to make the most of the stage.
“This fight is everything,” Gallegos told BoxingScene. “This is one of those moments that can change your career. I’m fighting not just for myself, but for my family, my team and everyone who’s been supporting me from day one.”
Gonzalez, 16-1-1 (12 KOs), is coming off a loss to former featherweight title contender Jason Sanchez. A 24-year-old from Reading, Pennsylvania, Gonzalez is, on paper, the toughest opponent Gallegos has fought to date.
“Julian Gonzalez is a solid fighter,” Gallegos said. “I believe I’m on another level. I’m faster, I’m more technical and I’m going to show that in the ring.”
Gallegos believes the years he spent alongside world-class boxers in Las Vegas prepared him for this moment.
“I’ve put in the rounds in the gym. I’ve stayed on point, and now it’s time to show I can go the distance at a high level if need be,” Gallegos said. “I’m not looking at it as pressure, I’m looking at it as an opportunity to prove I belong on this stage.”
