European cruiserweight champion Leonardo Mosquea will defend the title against mandatory challenger, 38-year-old Polish veteran Mateusz Masternak, on October 4 in Zakopane, Poland. Knockout Promotions stage the event after parties involved reached an agreement earlier today (August 6) and thus avoided purse bids.
This is the first defence of the title by Mosquea, who beat Englishman Cheavon Clarke to win the then-vacant title in December. Mosquea, 17-0, has since stopped Argentinian Ivan Gabriel Garcia in a bout for a regional WBA belt and appeared to be heading for a WBA eliminator against Arsen Goulamirian - but has now opted to defend the EBU title instead.
Masternak, 49-6, has scored two good wins since being forced to retire in the WBO title fight against Chris Billam-Smith in a 2023 fight when he was ahead on two of three scorecards. He won the EBU title back in 2012 but lost it to Grigory Drozd the year after.
