Lindolfo Delgado is one fight away from a title shot.
Delgado will be in the co-feature on Saturday night against Elvis Rodriguez on a card that takes place at the Palms Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. The fight will be a WBC and IBF junior welterweight title eliminator.
Delgado, 22-0 (14 KOs), trains in Moreno Valley, California, with Robert Garcia. A 2016 Mexican Olympian who is originally from Linares, Mexico, Delgado has been grinding to this point. He stopped Jackson Marinez in December, which was coming off the back of a split-decision win over Bryan Flores in August. Delgado, now 30, is looking for the title opportunity that has so far eluded him.
“I have been looking for this kind of fight,” Delgado said at Thursday’s press conference. “I'm so grateful. I'm so happy to be here, and I'm ready. I was waiting for an opportunity like this to fight a great fighter like Elvis.”
Delgado also talked about his preparation for the fight, noting that he had plenty of southpaw sparring to get ready for Rodriguez, a 29-year-old lefty from the Dominican Republic.
“I did my sparring with Giovani Santillan and a few more, and it was a great camp,” Delgado said. “In my amateur career, I fought a lot of southpaws, and I am just focused on this fight and ready.”
Rodriguez, 17-1-1 (13 KOs), trains in Hollywood at Wild Card Boxing Gym. He is on a six-fight winning streak since the majority decision loss in 2021 to Kenneth Sims Jnr that derailed the momentum he had at the time. Rodriguez was seen as a potential breakout star for Top Rank but was cut from the promotion, only to be re-signed by Top Rank last May. Delgado mostly spoke English at the press conference, but in his final refrain, he had to use a translator to explain what it would mean to put himself in position for a world title shot.
“It'd be very nice to win that type of fight and then be very close to a world title,” Delgado said via translator. “That makes me very happy because it's been a lot of years of hard work. I've been working at this since I was a kid.”
