OAKLAND, California – Lightweight Lorenzo Powell and his team are approaching the boxing business their way.
Powell will face Javier Rojas Campos in a six-round main event on Saturday at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California.
Powell, 4-0 (1 KO), and his team, consisting of childhood coach Marty Chima and Andriy Galygin, who now promotes him, opted to go the independent route in 2025. Galygin started G1 Promotions, and this will be Powell’s third fight for the promotional entity since March, with the first two cards happening in Stockton.
“The journey has always been to get to the top,” Powell told BoxingScene. “I am now not just a fighter, but I am a part-owner of a promotional company; the feeling is second to none.”
Powell explained that this camp was built on sacrifice. The team made multiple drives from their home base of Sacramento, California, to Las Vegas. Nearly a nine-hour drive one way. They also made trips to Oakland to promote the fight at the grassroots level. Powell, 22, faces Mexico’s Campos, 3-4 (1 KO). Campos, 27, has only fought three times since 2019. He won two fights, but his last bout saw him get stopped by Spencer Wilcox.
“This fight means the world to me, but not just this fight; every fight means the world to me,” Powell said. “I don’t look at any opponent as a slouch, and I see it as who wants it more, and I want it more.”
Powell has won his previous two fights in 2025 by unanimous decision. Powell explained why he believes he is a prospect to watch for.
“I have the whole package,” he said. “I will do whatever it takes to win.”
Powell aims to connect with the fans on Saturday and in future fights as he now looks to build his reputation in Northern California.
“Anywhere I fight, if I can reach one person that would mean the world to me,” Powell said. “I just want everyone in the room to fall in love with me and put on a spectacular performance.”
