Maxi Hughes has replaced Mark Chamberlain as the Irish junior welterweight Pierce O’Leary’s opponent on March 14 after an infection ruled Chamberlain out.
The appealing contest represented the chief support to the similarly appealing WBA super-featherweight title fight between the champion James “Jazza” Dickens and Anthony Cacace at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland in an occasion intended to mark St Patrick’s Day.
O’Leary, 26, is one of Ireland’s most promising fighters and most recently stopped Braian Esequiel Ronner of Argentina in December. Hughes – like Chamberlain, from England – lost via majority decision to Bakhodur Usmonov that same month.
“He’s out,” Frank Warren, whose organisation Queensberry Promotions is overseeing Dickens-Cacace, told BoxingScene. “He got a bad infection and was on an antibiotic drip in hospital.
“He’s still recovering, so hopefully we can reschedule for in future, providing Pierce gets through Maxi Hughes. It’s a great shame. Sold-out show, but we’ve still got a great main event and a great undercard.”
