Junior welterweight contender Michel Rivera is calling out the big names in his division including Rolando Romero, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney.
Rivera, who last fought in July defeating Hugo Alberto Roldan via a split-decision, was unimpressed with the recent performances of that bunch on Friday night’s card from Times Square.
Rivera, 26-1 (14 KOs), 27, did however praise Lopez’s efforts in winning a unanimous decision over Arnold Barboza Jnr.
“The only guy I saw that was a real fighter with real skill was Teofimo Lopez,” Rivera said. “I've been telling everyone that I can beat Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero on the same night.”
Rivera is currently in the Dominican Republic, but noted he will hold his next training camp in Las Vegas. Rivera's lackluster viewing experience of his peers extended to former lightweight king Devin Haney who won a unanimous decision over Jose Ramirez.
“He was just running,” Rivera said. “He didn't show anything in that fight.”
Rivera furthered his assessment of Haney. Rivera believes that after Haney’s fight with Garcia last year, a loss that was changed to a no contest, he has changed as a fighter.
“I believe he was too careful,” Rivera said. “After the Ryan fight, obviously everybody knows that he's not the same fighter.”
“For sure, I would fight them at welterweight, we can fight at 154lbs, if they want, I don't have a problem with that,” Rivera said. “I’m big, too.”
Rivera, currently ranked No.15 by the IBF at 140, didn’t just stop with those fighters. He also took aim at former junior welterweight title holder Subriel Matias, due to face Alberto Puello, who Rivera trains with. Both fighters are from the Dominican Republic but hold camps in Las Vegas.
“I believe that my skill and style will defeat Subriel Matias,” Rivera said. “I believe style makes fights and Subriel Matias just comes forward and he tries to break you down. I have more speed, more movement, everything. I can beat Matias. He’s a good fighter, but I am better.”
