MANCHESTER, England – Frank Warren has revealed that a fight with Moses Itauma could follow for Daniel Dubois if there isn’t a rematch with Fabio Wardley.
Dubois on Saturday at the Co-op Live stopped Wardley in 11 entertaining rounds to win the WBO heavyweight title, and the dramatic nature of their contest means that a rematch is widely expected to be next.
Warren confirmed, post-fight, that a rematch clause exists for the defeated Wardley, 31. The promising Itauma was ringside in Manchester and will next fight at London’s O2 Arena on August 8. The 21 year old is ranked first with the WBO and could therefore ensure that Dubois goes from one all-English heavyweight contest to another.
“There’s a rematch clause so we’ll see what happens,” the promoter said. “We’ll see what pans out in the next few months with all these various heavyweight fights that are happening. That’ll determine what’s gonna happen.
“It may well be [Itauma] but there’s lots of different fights and permutations. We’re not gonna definitely do it tonight, that’s for sure, so let Daniel go away and enjoy himself. As I say, there’s a rematch clause in the contract.
“It’s a huge fight. They’re all huge fights. All these heavyweight fights are huge fights, aren’t they? Agit [Kabayel] in Germany; Moses a few months ago. The heavyweight division is so good at the moment; there’s so many good fights, and we are delivering them, and the guys wanna sign each other. That’s why they’re signing up for Queensberry, to help us make the fights happen.”
On May 23 the IBF, WBA and WBC champion Oleksandr Usyk fights the kickboxer-turned-boxer Rico Verhoeven. Anthony Joshua fights the little known Kristian Prenga on July 25; Tyson Fury is also expected to fight before being matched with Joshua later in 2026.
“He gets amazing credit,” Warren said of Wardley. “He’s a warrior. He showed that. That’s what he is. I’ve got nothing but the utmost respect for him and he’ll come again ‘cause he’s that type of guy. You’ve seen the heart he’s got – and so did Daniel, who’s been in a load of tough fights.
“He’s not had an easy fight. He’s fought two fights with Usyk, and before that five or six guys all top-10 ranked, and he was an underdog in every single fight.
“[Wardley] was getting stitched up – his nose and his eyes, and I couldn’t speak to him because the doctor was attending to him. I think he’s going for a check up at the hospital.
“It was [Dubois’] heart, and it’s the same with Fabio – that’s what kept him going. Their heart. It’s phenomenal what they did.”
Before Wardley and the 28-year-old Dubois made their way to the ring in Manchester, Zak Chelli, also of England, unexpectedly and dramatically stopped Cuba’s highly-rated David Morrell in the 10th of 10 rounds.
“That’s probably the biggest upset I’ve seen in a fight since Amir Khan getting beat by Breidis Prescott,” explained Warren. "You’ve got to take your hat off to him. You look at the fight [Morrell] had with [David] Benavidez; it’s unbelievable what he did. He’s launched himself into a good position.
“This is the best fight card I’ve done. That’s how good it was.”
