Randy Petalcorin gets the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBA Interim junior flyweight title on August 26 when he faces grizzled Panamanian veteran Walter Tello.
 
It’s not an opportunity the 22-year-old Filipino who boasts a record of 22-1-1, 16 knockouts intends to let slip.
 
"To fight for a WBA world title is a dream come true,” Petalcorin told BoxingScene.com two weeks ago. “I would like to thank my manager Peter Maniatis for making this possible I know he has worked very hard to get me this world title opportunity I have been training hard.”
 
Since Zou Shiming turned professional, boxing in China has become popular. Promoter Top Rank regularly host shows in Macau because of this.
 
That wasn’t lost on Petalcorin’s manager/promoter Peter Maniatis who promotes Tuesday’s show.
 
"The promotion in Shanghai will be at the 17,000 capacity Mercedes Benz Arena,” said Maniatis who also hosts TV programme KO Boxing in Australia as well as Radio Ringside. “Its big chance for Randy at 22-years-old to put his name up on the world stage and the promoters have been very good to Team Petalcorin I am sure China will be a powerhouse soon in professional boxing.”
 
Petalcorin appreciates that Tello (20-7, 8 Ko’s) is more experienced at world level that he is.
 
"Walter Tello has fought for three world titles he is a world class boxer who is very experienced and like all South American boxers have good skills and are always fit and tough" he said.
 
Understandably Maniatis doesn’t want to look past Tello towards the full champion Albert Rossel, though does admit that Rossel is the long term target.
 
"Randy has to beat Walter Tello it’s a very hard fight and the toughest and best opponent Petalcorin has faced in his pro career,” said Maniatis. “So it’s impossible to look past Tello at this stage but if Randy can beat Tello then yes of course we would fight Alberto Rossel but lets not get ahead of ourselves we are just focusing on Tello and performing for 12-rounds to get the job done"
 
Tello has been a professional since 2006, he lost unanimous decision to Manuel Vargas in early 2009 when he fought for the WBA Interim strawweight title. His second opportunity came when he challenged Giovani Segura for the WBA junior flyweight crown and he was stopped in three rounds. His third opportunity came when he lost a unanimous decision to the aforementioned Rossel.
