Mike Rossman, who won the WBA light heavyweight title in 1978, is undergoing physical therapy in rehab after suffering from a stroke.
The 70-year-old was only 22 when he claimed the title, beating Victor Galindez via stoppage in the 13th round. He would make one successful defense, halting Aldo Traversaro in six, before suffering an injury in the Galindez rematch, a bout he would lose in nine rounds.
Born in Turnersville, New Jersey, Rossman would fight some of the top light heavies of a golden era while compiling a record of 44-7-3 (27 KOs). As well as Galindez, Rossman would also go to war with Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Lonnie Bennett, Mike Quarry, Yaqui Lopez and Mike Nixon.
The Veteran Boxers’ Association (VBA) is appealing for donations to assist with Rossman’s treatment and to ensure his Atlantic City apartment – which is currently run down - is suitable for his return. According to Russell Peltz, Rossman’s former promoter, the target is $25,000.
“He has no cell phone, no television, just a bed and a landline,” said Peltz. “He was a big part of my career as a promoter having boxed for me 19 times out of his 54 fights.”
The VBA reported: “Recently, Mike Rossman suffered a stroke and is facing an extended recovery. He is currently in rehab, beginning physical therapy. We are raising money to aid his recovery and help him pay for the many expenses connected to his recuperation.”
Those wishing to donate can do so directly via the VBA website or send a check to VBA-RingOne/Rossman, VBA Ring One, PO Box 428, Sewell, NJ 08080.
“After providing us with many unforgettable moments, Mike Rossman now needs our help.”
