Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford official for September 12
With Terence Crawford at ringside, and the four-division champion being brought into the ring after the decision, there was little mystery as to what the next move would be for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Moments after the scores were read for Alvarez’s unanimous decision win over William Scull to once again become undisputed super middleweight champion on Saturday, the Mexican star’s next fight with the unbeaten switch-hitter from Omaha, Nebraska, was officially announced for Friday, September 12.
The fight will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the home field of the National Football League’s Las Vegas Raiders and the most recent host venue for WrestleMania last month.
The two fighters had their first staredown, with Crawford, who won his first world title at 135lbs, holding a slight height advantage over Alvarez, who won his first world title at 154lbs.
The 37-year-old Crawford, 41-0 (31 KOs), last fought in August, defeating Israil Madrimov to win a title at 154lbs. That fight was his first above 147lbs; now he will jump up to 168lbs, where Canelo has mostly fought at since defeating Callum Smith by unanimous decision in 2020.
Alvarez, 63-2-2 (39 KOs), of Guadalajara, Mexico, is three years younger than Crawford at 34. He has now won six straight fights since his decision loss to Dmitry Bivol in a 2022 light heavyweight title match.
