Two months ago, Chantelle Cameron, after signing with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), said of her new promoters, “If you’re a woman, it’s where you want to be at the minute. It’s the platform you want.”
Since then, we have seen a flurry of other women join Amanda Serrano at Jake Paul’s MVP, including not only Cameron but Alycia Baumgardner, Cherneka Johnson, Savannah Marshall, Ellie Scotney and Ramla Ali. Each of those women boxed at Madison Square Garden, New York, on July 11, on a show streamed by Netflix, and each have found some momentum and a boost in profile as a result of joining MVP.
The latest fighter to make the move is England’s Terri Harper, whose deal with MVP was announced this afternoon and whose excitement levels recall those of the women who signed before her. “The next chapter of my career is going to be the best one yet,” she wrote on social media today. “Big fights only!! Caroline Dubois, let’s go.”
Harper, the WBO lightweight champion, has been involved in a verbal back and forth with Dubois, the WBC lightweight champion, for some time now. Both girls are English, both are confident in their ability to beat the other, and both are happy to say whatever is on their mind. In fact, it came as no surprise when Dubois, 11-0-1 (5 KOs), took to social media to post her immediate reaction to Harper’s callout.
“Congratulations,” she wrote to Harper, 16-2-2 (6 KOs). “But it takes 2 to tango “champ”. I want this fight next. I’m speaking to my team every day to ensure this happens next. I hope you can keep that energy and make sure your team work for this fight to happen next.”
With Dubois currently promoted by Boxxer, and Harper now with MVP, there are, it seems, certain barriers in place which could prevent this natural fight from happening in the near future. However, it is just as possible that things changed on that front and that the desire to make the fight on the part of both – plus some common sense – will be enough to break down those barriers either this year or next.
