Raul Curiel will have a new face in his corner, switching trainers to Robert Garcia after previously working with Freddie Roach.

“It is definitely another level of training and sparring,” Curiel said in a press release. “I have gotten along very well with everyone in the gym, and with the whole team of trainers.”

Curiel, 15-0-1 (13 KOs), is a 29-year-old welterweight from Mexico. He turned pro in 2017 and is coming off a majority draw with fellow contender Alexis Rocha in December.

Curiel is ranked by all four major sanctioning bodies: No. 6 by the WBC, No. 9 by the IBF, No. 12 by the WBA and No. 15 by the WBO. He is signed with Golden Boy Promotions.

“Curiel is a great kid with a lot of potential, plus he’s friends with most of my fighters in my gym,” Garcia said in the press release. “He was also a teammate in the 2016 Olympics with Misael Rodriguez and Lindolfo Delgado, so he fits perfect at [Robert Garcia Boxing Academy]. He knows he’s not very far from fighting for a world title, so he knows how important it is for the whole team to work very hard.”

Curiel’s manager, Frank Espinoza, praised Garcia and also had kind words for their experience with Roach.

“I believe Robert Garcia is one of the top trainers in the world, and I really think he’s a good fit for Raul,” Espinoza said. “We’re very thankful to Freddie for all he’s done. They did great work together, but Raul wanted to get a breath of fresh air.”
