Chantelle Cameron plans to move down to welterweight to win a world title in a third weight division once she has won the vacant WBO junior-middleweight title against Michaela Kotaskova.
She and her Czech opponent on Sunday contest the UK’s first women’s world-title fight scheduled for three-minute rounds, and do so at London’s Olympia, on the undercard of the lightweight unification title fight between Cameron’s fellow Britons Terri Harper and Caroline Dubois.
Cameron was the undisputed junior-welterweight champion until losing her rematch with Katie Taylor in 2023. The 34-year-old Kotaskova has also moved up in weight – she was previously at welterweight – but for all that she is enjoying not having to dehydrate herself, Cameron, also 34, is aware that she cannot remain at 154lbs long-term.
“I will be going back down,” she told BoxingScene. “I won’t be staying at this weight.
“[The additional weight has been] easy. It’s not really having to make weight. I’ve moved up two weights so it’s a very happy fight week.
“I’m basically having to put a bit more muscle on. [The effects of that have been] really good.
“[It’s] a chance to become a two-weight world champion. But this is just another – the icing on the cake for me is I wanna go and win a world title at the weight below as well and become three-time world champion. I want to get Sunday out of the way and go from there.
“[Kotaskova is] very good. There’s a lot of strengths, but I’m just going to focus on my strengths and what I do best and not worry about what my opponent does wrong. As long as I turn up and I pick up on her weaknesses, that’s all I’m bothered about.”
Sunday’s fight is her first since reuniting with her trainer Jamie Moore, following their separation in February 2024, two months after the defeat by Taylor.
“Amazing,” she responded when asked how that development had been. “It’s been like a happy reunion. I’ve just got my family back.
“There’s a lot of great fighters. There’s Pat Brown; there’s Conah Walker. Especially Conah Walker – I’ve got a real good bond with him. We’re very similar – he’s been a massive help to me. A proper game changer. He’s been helping me loads. It’s been absolutely fantastic. He’s been helping me so much.”
