Junior lightweight prospect Abel Mejia expects to show his growth as a fighter on Saturday.

Mejia, 7-0 (5 KOs), faces Antonio Dunton El Jnr in a six-round bout at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California. The bout will stream on UFC Fight Pass.

Mejia is an action fighter, and he’s faced his share of adversity in the ring. In his fifth fight, he was dropped in the second round, only to stop his opponent a round later. He also suffered a cut in his cheek in his third fight.

Mejia, of Orange, California, is a local ticket seller. He’s fought at the Commerce Casino five times before. He’s shown his toughness – now he wants to show his craft.

“I am going to show my versatility,” Abel told BoxingScene about his upcoming fight. “I want to show more of my skills.”

“This fight is all business,” Drew Mejia, Abel’s father and trainer, said. “He fights better against better competition, and we are expecting him to show that.”

Drew spends a lot of time looking up his son’s opponents. He talked in detail about Dunton El, 6-3-2 (2 KOs), 28. He noticed that Dunton El had fought mostly undefeated fighters and that he is a better fighter than his record suggests.

Dunton El’s losses came to unbeaten Francois Scarboro Jnr, Ofacio Falcon, and Johnny Spell. He has two draws with unbeaten fighters as well. When asked about how to prepare for the upcoming opponent, Drew was simple and poetic.

“His aggression will be his downfall,” Drew said.

Though he wants to show his skills, Abel’s violent style shone through in his answers. “I see myself as a caged monster,” he said. “I am just waiting for them to open the gate and give me someone to eat.”
