The fight is taking place at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Who is Carlos Adames?

Carlos Adames, 24-1-1 (18 KOs), is the WBC middleweight titleholder. The 31-year-old from the Dominican Republic captured the sanctioning body’s secondary interim belt back in October 2022 with a third-round TKO of Juan Macias Montiel – who had ended James Kirkland in 2020 and was widely outpointed by then-WBC titleholder Jermall Charlo in 2021.

Adames went on to stop Julian Williams in the ninth round of their June 2023 match. He was upgraded to the WBC’s primary titleholder at 160lbs in May 2024 after Charlo was stripped. One month later, Adames made his first defense with a lopsided decision over Terrell Gausha. His second defense came in February 2025, and while Adames retained with a draw, many felt he deserved the victory over a wounded Hamzah Sheeraz on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol II.

It’s been more than a year since Adames stepped in the ring. This fight with Williams was originally supposed to take place on January 31 in New York City underneath Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson, but Adames had to pull out the day before and was taken to hospital because of dehydration. Will Adames have an easier weight cut this time around, or will his performance be affected by making 160?

Who is Austin “Ammo” Williams?

Williams, 20-1 (13 KOs), is a 29-year-old middleweight contender from Florida who is ranked third at 160lbs by the WBC. He came up short the last time he stepped up against upper-tier opposition. That was in June 2024, when Williams succumbed to the aforementioned Sheeraz via 11th-round TKO. There shouldn’t be too much shame in that given how good Sheeraz has turned out to be.

But we also shouldn’t necessarily conclude that Adames seeming superior against Sheeraz in 2025 means that he’ll therefore have an easy night with Williams. First of all, Sheeraz fought most of that bout with an injured hand. Plus, as we know, the “triangle theory” in boxing is fallacious. The most famous example is that Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali, George Foreman pounded Frazier, and yet Foreman didn’t defeat Ali.

Back to Williams: since the loss to Sheeraz, he is on a four-fight winning streak. That includes a decision over the 19-1 Patrice Volny in 2025 and a ninth-round TKO of the 11-0-2 Ivan Vazquez in July. When January’s match with Adames was postponed, Williams remained busy that night anyway, taking a 10-round decision against last-minute replacement Wendy Toussaint.

This is a very fast turnaround for Williams – just seven weeks since the Toussaint win. Will that have a positive effect on him or a detrimental one?

What other fights are on the undercard of Carlos Adames vs. Austin “Ammo” Williams?
