Carlos Adames and Austin “Ammo” Williams came in under the championship weight limit for their WBC middleweight title bout Saturday night at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
Adames, the titleholder, tipped the scales at nearly two pounds under the middleweight limit at 158.6lbs, while Williams came in at 159.6lbs.
Adames, 24-1-1 (18 KOs), will be looking to make his third defense of his WBC title after being elevated to full champion. Adames, a 31-year-old Dominican fighter who trains in Las Vegas, fought Hamzah Sheeraz to a draw last February. This will also mark only the fifth WBC middleweight title defense of this decade, dating back to September 2020. The bout was originally scheduled for January 31, but Adames withdrew the day of the fight due to illness.
Williams, 20-1 (13 KOs), criticized Adames’ decision to withdraw in January and had harsh words for the titleholder in the build-up to their fight. Williams, a 29-year-old who now lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, will be in the first title fight of his career. His lone loss came to Sheeraz, who stopped him in 2024 but Williams has won four straight since.
The co-feature pits promising 2024 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones of Orlando against Christian Gomez. Jones, 5-0 (4 KOs), weighed in at 151.6lbs; a weight matched by Christian Gomez. In January, the 23-year-old Jones won a six-round unanimous decision over Jerome Baxter. It ended a four-fight knockout streak to begin his pro career.
Gomez, a 30-fight veteran, holds a record of 23-6-1 (21 KOs) but has lost four of his last five, albeit in good company. In July, he lost a unanimous decision to Alberto Palmetta, which was preceded by a loss to Nicklaus Flaz. Notably, Gomez lost a 10-round unanimous decision to current WBA welterweight No.1 contender, Shakhram Giyasov, in 2022.
