Omari Jones made it look easy Saturday, handing Christian Gomez an eight-round unanimous decision loss in the co-feature at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
All three scores were 80-72. The bout was promoted by Matchroom Boxing and streamed on DAZN.
Jones, a 2024 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist, wasted no time frustrating Gomez, who struggled to mount anything effective against the decorated amateur. In his first bout scheduled for eight rounds, Jones, of Orlando, systematically broke down his opponent.
In the fifth round, Jones opened up a cut over the left eye of Gomez, 32. Jones cruised to victory in his hometown, fighting a composed fight – especially given that he is only 23 years old.
Jones, now 6-0 (4 KOs), started his career with four straight knockouts, but this year he has had back-to-back decision wins. In January, he won a six-round unanimous decision over Jerome Baxter.
Gomez, of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, fell to 23-7-1 (21 KOs).
In a high-stakes lightweight bout between two undefeated fighters, Corey Marksman, of Sanford, Florida, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Jaycob Gomez, of Caguas, Puerto Rico.
Scores were 98-92, 98-92 and 96-94.
Marksman, aptly, was the more accurate of the two fighters, while Gomez aimed to land heavy shots early in the fight. Marksman, 25, outworked Gomez with a clinical display of boxing skill and a hand-speed advantage.
Gomez, 24, had blood in his mouth during the fourth round but also had some success landing body shots in the middle rounds. Marksman, though, was too quick, too sharp and, like his nickname, “too smooth,” as anything Gomez did that was effective was stifled by a busier, more accurate response.
Marksman improved to 13-0-1 (9 KOs) and has now defeated five unbeaten fighters.
Gomez suffered his first career loss, dropping to 14-1-1 (8 KOs).
In the opening bout, heavyweight Teremoana Teremoana, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, knocked out Curtis Harper of Jacksonville, Florida, in the first round. The time of the stoppage was 2 minutes, 59 seconds. Teremoana landed a straight right hand that sent Harper crashing to the canvas.
A 28-year-old who competed for Australia in the 2024 Olympics, Teremoana is now 10-0 (10 KOs).
The 37-year-old Harper slipped to 19-13 (13 KOs).
